Referee Dilemma – Part 1

ref⋅er⋅ee
[ref-uh-ree]
noun, verb, -eed, -ee⋅ing.
–noun
1. one to whom something is referred, esp. for decision or settlement; arbitrator.
2. (in certain games and sports) a judge having functions fixed by the rules of the game or sport; umpire.
3. an authority who evaluates scientific, technical, or scholarly papers, grant proposals, or the like for the publication or funding institution to which they have been submitted.
4. Law. a person selected by a court to take testimony in a case and return it to the court with recommendations as to the decision.
–verb (used with object)
5. to preside over as referee; act as referee in.
–verb (used without object)
6. to act as referee.
Origin:
1605–15; refer + -ee

Referees or marshals - in paintball games, you always hope that they will make the right decisions in your favor. Praying that the refs near the bugger you’re shooting at would catch any hits in a split second. Praying that you won’t get call out just because you knelt over paintballs, and it broke nicely on your knee. Hoping that spray near the bunker that rubs at your loader doesn’t count as hit.

From player’s side of view, you can always tell what you are doing. You are the referee of yourself. You KNOW when you get hit. It’s your body. You just know. You KNOW who got hit first when you make a run through. You KNOW when the loud pop sounds near the loader, it’s always a hit and not turn around and look the other way.

You see, referees don’t have that privilege. They have to see a lot of things simultaneously. And there will always something be missed and sometimes comes back and bite you in the ass. Wrong decisions going your way. Why? Oh, the referee was looking at the situation differently. But, you KNOW you are right. Can you blame the refs?

Try to be in their shoes. I know some of you had refereeing games before so you guys would know best. It’s not easy to make calls and decisions, when you’re there under the hot sun, with paintballs flying at 280~300 feet per second! And you have 10 players to look at. It’s hard, but not impossible. That’s why you have eight or more referees in paintball field. (speedball, eg: MY-NPL, MPOC)

Here's good example.

I’ve never refereed any games before but I know how the referees felt. The least you guys could do is to play fair and help the refs and make it easy for them and everyone.

Then, there are good refs and not so good refs.

To be continued...

don't we wish every player's like that..? but that's not the case, with high stakes playing, there bound to be someone trying to take advantage of a certain 'grey' situation... heck, even in rec game with no prize to grab, they'd still wipe, play-on etc... :-/

the refs are to uphold the rules of the game & of course be firm with the calls. being the 3rd team inside the field, so to speak, adequate training is a must in order to keep up with the speedy actions of the game, & also to move around without distrupting the whole course of the game. been reffing games b4 tho never in major tourneys, but still it's a tough task.

Referees are a rare breed with their numbers decreasing each year. Recruiting a good PB player is hard enough but recruiting a good & reliable ref is even harder.

The photo shows a player arguing with the ref, but of course the ref has the final say - no matter what. Do you have to ask that?

yeah, it IS hard to b a ref..
trying to b d best n make a gud call while bein accused not doing a gud job..
pressure lh..huhu

*it's gud when some ppl do understand ;)

badman said...

as they say, "it's a dirty job, but somebody gotta do it". just figure of speech, it's hard but not dirty one lah... well, might be physically dirty if it's the muddy WCA... hehehe

it's better if players read & understand the rules. this would be easier on the refs instead wasting time 'explaining' to the player on why he's out. there were times when player got so pissed at the ref for pulling him out when he's not being shot at all. turns out he never knew abt the 1-4-1 penalty. this kinda norm among newbies, but this guy wasn't even playing in D3 or D4 but the higher div.. talk abt ignorance..!

having said all that, we do have to admit that there are some ref that take things for granted, being 'the voice' in the field, some tend to be arrogant, simply calling "out" before verifying it's truly a valid hit or not, some even fail to differentiate a hit & a rub. to make it worse, easily pissed off when decisions are disputed.
apart from dishonest players, these are part of the 'game killer'.. :-/

numbers of ref decreasing, yeah.. sad case.. & the good ones are hard to replace.. hope the remaining one would upgrade their effort in assuring the games go on fairly & safely..

hail the marshals..! ;-)

why so defensive. its just an innocent question. are u feeling guilty for anything caranthir??

Caranthir said...

why should I? I'm not being defensive or anything. Did you got any knee-jerk response when you see the photo?

If you have at least read the entire post, you'll know the photo is just a photo. Unless you have your mind set on different agenda before you read this.

Anonymous said...

if u have at least a good basic writer's ethics, then u would have known better to put the remarks "sekadar gambar hiasan" below the picture. takkan tak pernah baca paper En. Caranthir??

Caranthir said...

Great that you think I'm a writer. I don't feel like one and I don't care. I have tons of photos all over this blog, and NO I don't put caption on them, so what makes this one so special that you're being anal about it?

Before anything else, go read section "READ - Safety Precaution" at the right column. Read the words in bold.

Get it?

Anonymous said...

If u really dont care about what u write & how it affects peoples judgement, then tell me why are u being so defensive in the 1st place? My simple question earlier just needed a simple answer, YES or NO. U say 1 thing but your reaction showed another & no, i do not take u as a writer at all. None of you contributors deserve to be called a writer. It takes more than just being sarcastic to be called so.

Caranthir said...

Again, I've already told you I'm not being defensive or anything. Go READ MY POST. It's there for a reason.

And I've also asked you to read section "READ - Safety Precaution" at the right column, which you obviously missed it or just didn't understand.

Go read 2nd paragraph, 2nd sentence. That's what you're doing. And sarcasm? ROFL!

Aiyo fren! Over photo also want to kecoh is it... arghhh restraint2!

Please can we just concentrate on the issue here rather than some lame photo & whether its supposed to have a caption bla bla bla...

A very reliable source has informed me that in 2009 MY NPL refs will be VERY STRICT in enforcing the rules... so don't f' with d rules!

alah caran dia nak suruh letak dia punya pic lah tu dia dia segan nak cakap kat caran suruh letak pic dia....hahahahha
aper ar pasai benda kecik pun nak jadi hal

badman said...

hmm.. ketandusan idea or issue kot.. a pix says 1000 words, so story kot boleh jadi memacam, armband still intact pulak tu.. diaorang tgh sembang pasal nak start kat gate mana ke.. or pasal bunker kempis ke.. or maybe player tgh ngadu pasal penonton bawak irrelavant issue... :-P

to me it's just a pix of ref/player in action, which can be seen in any normal game, plus it goes with the story.. nothing to it lah..

tak penah pun aku tgk kat facefull yang dia letak caption "sekadar gambar hiasan" jika ada isu-isu yg berkaitan....

letak jer gambo dia...kalau aku aku letak tajuk gambo tu skali mcm ni "gambar menunjukkan pemain sedang bertengkar dengan ref" guna perkataan "bertengkar" tuh supaya bole di panjangkan lagi isu nih. jgan guna perkataan yg lembut seperti bermushawarah ke ber diskusi ke dll sbb org mcm nak tau nih ko guna ayat aper ker dia masih nak belit gak..bengong...org citer benda lain, sibuk dia dgn benda lain....

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

once again, it was just a question that needed short and simple answer. Who didnt understand the question now?

Comparing this to facefull...hohoho..dude im laughing my ass off!

To Anonymous, are you talking about yourself? I dont have time to defend any team but as Badman put it, A PICTURE SAYS A THOUSAND WORDS. So which words were you saying? Get it?

To Caranthir, if you had answered, "NO"..my question ended there. But you insisted on making it a big deal, then came the long and never ending reply.

Anonymous said...

Kepada Yang Berkenaan

"A PICTURE SAYS A THOUSAND WORDS"

Maksudnya...all words written by the writer lah.. Everything is all about the post. From the post pun dah banyak "WORDS". So takkan ler tak paham kot.... Takkan nak cite pasal Referee Dilemma nk letak gambo orang tengah mandi ker....tengah makan ker...or gambo orang tengah dok menawar harga baju kat Petaling Street kot. Be mature

Anonymous said...

its "be matured" lah...

Si kuat sentap Nak Tau mintak si Caranthir jawab Yes atau No je bagi soalan yg dia tanya tu..meh aku jawabkan bagi pihak Caranthir

Jawapan 1
Is the picture intended to mean anything or just sekadar gambar hiasan?

Yes (apa yg Yes nye)

Jawapan 2
Is the picture intended to mean anything or just sekadar gambar hiasan?

No (apa yg No nye)

Nak Tau nak dengar jawapan Yes or NO je tapi tak macam tergantung ke jawapannye kalau jawab macam tu.Aku ni yg sekolah kampung je pon tau jawapan mcm tu tergantung. Lagi la dia tak puas hati nanti bila jawab mcm tu.

Bila si mamat caranthir tu jawab detail sikit je, terus nak menyentap. lawak betul la nak tau ni.

Ni perangai kuat menyentap ni bahaya kalau bawak ke padang masa tournamen.Tak pasal2 nanti jadi macam dalam gambar tu kang.

Sorry cikgu Anonymous...cikgu ajar tak cukup huruf....maklumlah org hulu...tapi orang hulu mcm nih pun tahu maksud gambar tak ada intention nk kenakan sesapa...tapi nk tanya jer lah... saya nih org hulu...apa maksud "WOILD" dlm penulisan tuan... saya cari dlm kamus tak jumpa lah...

Anonymous said...

Anonymous,

by the way...it is "be mature" not "be matured"..... before nak tegur orang pergi kelas english dulu... hi hi hi...lawak lawak

Anonymous said...

be mature and be matured are both correct because both are used in an incomplete sentences.

Dah lama aku tak masuk blog ni. Korang ni pasal gambar pun nak bising...pasal spelling pun nak gaduh... Tak kisah la pasal tu. Lepas ni blog ni hanya akan menggunakan gambar Team Armada supaya dapat mengurangkan kekeliruan. Senang cerita....itu pun kalau tuan punya blog ni ada gambar kita orang lah.

nasihat aku pd ref2 jnr, tingkatkan knowledge psl rules & taktik plyrs ni. jgn byk guna tenaga tp akal. komunikasi & kerjasama no 1 dlm pdg...concentrate pd playrs bukan pd game. stamina kena bagus, psikologi pn kena bagus jgk. dptkn tips drpd ref2 snr. rules book hanya panduan, bykkan study psl situasi. tak kira la samada ref dr mpoc, mpro atau mprb...kongsi pengalaman & pengetahuan. x rugi. aku pn bleh share apa yg aku tau.
nasihat aku utk plyer, bukan berapa lama korang dlm paintball tp berapa lama korang boleh bertahan dlm event. renung2kn...chalo.
