Ministry To Turn Sports Into A Thriving Industry

LABUAN, June 8 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Youth and Sports hope to turn sports into an industry to help generate economy for the country said its minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

Ahmad Shabery said the ministry would set up a special unit in July, to draw up strategies and plans to see the initiative succeed.

He added that the unit would identify several potential sports events to be promoted aggressively to gain attention from the people at large.

"We are going to turn sports into an industry which in turn will help generate revenue for our country. A special unit will be set up in July to help realize this mission," he told reporters after launching a Fitness Exploration event organised by the Labuan Youth and Sports Department yesterday.

The Minister said the country has several sports events that manages to attract a large number of local and foreign spectators and has generated income to the country.

He said Formula 1 and badminton are among those that has managed to attract international spectators and tourists.

Ahmad Shabery also said a national sports directory, detailing the location of sports events and facilities, need to be updated to cater for the increasing sports players in the country.

"The directory has not been updated for so long. I would like to see it updated as soon as possible," he said.

Ahmad Shabery also said that the country was still facing a shortage of sport facilities that needed to be addressed by the government if it aspires to see sports, grow internationally.

However he said such a problem should not be a barrier for sports players to develop their talents.

"Some countries do not even have fields for football, but their players are now playing with international clubs. So, we must not be misled that only if there are good facilities can we take sports to greater heights, it is all about mentality," he said.

Meanwhile, he said that Labuan has potential to host international lawn bowl events due to the availability of international facilities.

"The Ministry is willing to consider if there is any request from the association for Labuan to host Lawn Bawl international game," he said.

Note: Luxes in Labuan, can only related to certain issues highlighted previously. On the concern issue, looks like the organizer for the above event, didn't know anything about paintball safety at all. Any ideas who did that event?
