MPOC 2011 - Event 3 - Team X-Fox

One of the most craziest match I've ever witness. An X-Fox player was given a 3-for-1 penalty and since he was the last man, the team started with only two guys in the next point. Although they lost, they pulled together and got back the next point to force into overtime.

I edited out some of the 'dramatic' parts (for later videos perhaps) and here's a bit of what went on that day. Still trying to figure out the best rendering settings for HD video and stuff, so bear with me. Thanks for watching.

MPOC 2011 - My Say

To tell you the truth, this was my first time ever to play in Melaka. I had to miss the last three events there due to family matters, so when this opportunity came again, I just had to take it. And did I enjoyed it very much. Weather was hot, humid and occasionally breezy. The turf was in good condition and the venue is just superb. Situated right in the middle of the city, it offered a totally new paintball experience.

Now back to the event. I like what they did with the D1 preliminaries. All the games were played in the first day instead of splitting them into two days. It gives teams to rest and recover for knock out rounds on Sunday. X-Fox were on a bad roll when they couldn't get a decent result and Xtioneers snagged the last spot from them to be in the semis against Nemesis Legion.

In the other D1 semi finals, Demonz snaked their way into the finals by some crafty play in the dorito side against Ronins. The referees were having a hard time keeping up with the game so bad that UJ Junaidi had to call in the refs and remind them to do their job properly.

Xtioneers somehow pulled out a rabbit out of the hat when they came back to tie up with Nemesis 1-1 in the last 45 seconds and managed to bring the game into overtime in which they won it comprehensively. It's their first finals in two years, screamed Catherine ecstatically. They then met up with Demonz, the winner from the other semis and only to get steam rolled. Xtioneers had no answer to Demonz swift play in the finals.

In the 3rd-4th game, Ronin beat Nemesis Legion 2-1 in over time after both teams battled to a draw in regulation time. Nemesis fielded up their best line up to counter Ronin's best with STK players guested with them. Both teams played exciting and tough battles to the delight of the fans and spectators.

Prize giving ceremony was held right the players area and everything went smoothly except a no-show by Nemesis during prize giving ceremony. Winners were in joyful mood and it continued on into the night.

I was glad to see they have a lot more referees in field 1, especially in D1 and D2 games where its needed the most. And with a little tweak here and there, I'm sure we could see notorious run-thrus and blatant wiping can be lessen. Cheers to organizers and see you guys in Kedah. For full results from other division, please check my previous post here

No Pro Division in Asia Cup 2011 this weekend

As confirmed by Asia Cup Tournament Director Mr Sofian Daud, there will be NO Pro Division in Asia Cup this weekend. Referring to the official tournament website for the very first time in Asia, they plan to bring in full Pro team roster from World Class International Pro players from Europe and USA. Maybe they'll have more luck next year. Here's some info on the game schedules.

‎ASIA CUP 2011 - Games Schedule. Saturday, 15 January 8.00 am - Semi-Pro at Field No. 1, D2 at Field No. 2 and D4 at Field No. 3 will commence their Preliminary Round Games. D1 at Field No. 1 and D3 at Field No 2 will game on later of the day, after the completion of the morning game of other divisions at the respective fields.

I was hoping to see which Pro Players would be coming. It's always nice to see professionals coming down to Malaysia for tournaments.

Meanwhile in the same weekend, MPOC 2011 kicks off at Padang Bukit Ekspo, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) with more than 70 already registered. This will also be the first time MPOC will have 3 tournament fields set up. Should be a good tournament.

Battle of January - MPOC vs MY-NPL

Referring to this post and this post, both parties have already waged 'wars' on each others. Both promoters are now aggressively attracting teams to their first event of 2011 with MPOC throwing free entries to WCA 2010 participated teams while Asia Cup & MY-NPL promised to deliver a better yet well organized international standard tournament for everyone! How that can even top up the recent World Cup Asia 2010, only time will tell.

With competition getting fierce on who has the most share of 'the pie', this could turn out to be good for the players. More choices and options to start their year. Let the fight begin.

MPOC 2010 - After the Finale

The final leg of MPOC 2010 finally rolled down its curtains last weekend. MPSJ Stadium in Subang Jaya provided a great backdrop to a finale that everyone is waiting for. The field was in excellent condition even after heavy downfall the night before and in the morning of the first day. The track side provided alot of cool shades and dry ground for players area. The grandstand offered a unobstructed view of both fields and spectators gets to enjoy the weekend watching good paintball from a covered stands.

The new scoreboard was introduced first time in the final leg and it added a different dimension to the game. Especially Division 1 players where time is always a factor. It felt good to always know the current score, time left and time break in between. It helped alot on your strategy and gameplan. The scoreboard works beautifully on the first day. The distinct sound of game buzzer helps the game to start much efficietly. Somehow on Sunday morning, the scoreboards wasn't working and we had to resort back to manual scoring. But they got it back to work soon and everything was smooth sailing.

Another point of interest was that Thailand's team Infernal made their debut in this final leg of MPOC. They were expecting to give everybody a run for their money since they have been performing consistently in Malaysia for the past few years. Winners of ISSC 2010 and World Cup Asia 2008, surely that are the team to be expected to be in the finals. In their way, Macdev Ronin, X-Fox and Demonz Red were fighting for the overall Championship with only ONE point difference between them.

As expected, Infernal made it into the semis along with Ronin, X-Fox and Demonz. This promises a great matchup between Ronins vs Infernal and X-Fox vs Demonz. Demonz brushed aside the Foxes to reach the final while Ronins beat Infernal. In the finals, Demonz edged Ronins slightly to take home the win and the overall Championship. Heartbreak for Macdev Ronins, as the have been leading the MPOC rankings up till the end but only lost out the title only from a countback. Getting into four finals in a season was a huge achievement and they showed remarkably high consistency finishes.

I could never praise enough on the amount of upgrades that have been poured into MPOC. This year, they have invested heavily in the Sup'Air Arenas and new venues. Now with fill stations in each pit area and a spanky new LED Scoreboard for X-Ball type games, it can only get better towards World Cup Asia. Despite all of these, one thing that weren't consistent enough was of course the refereeing. I had to find out the hard way and we had some really poor refereeing made against us while other teams got off lightly. I also noticed that with there weren't enough referees to cover the action especially Division 1 games and sometimes players get pulled out very late or nothing happened at all. Spectators also saw that some calls can be made easily and straightforward had the referees were more alert to spot the hit.

In future events, I hope more referees will be placed in the semis and finals game of Division 1 and 2. It's already hard enough to play against any Divsion 1 team and when you have calls went the wrong way cause of zero alertness, that is just heartbreaking. PC Trauma was one of the victim and they subsequently shied away from this leg. Our friends from STK Australia, told us of how one Malaysian team with their notorious reputation made it all the way there. But they came anyway for some good time with us and they did! They enjoyed the atmosphere, field and the whole Malaysian hospitality. We'll be seeing them again this November - as the enemy!

A big shout out to team sponsors and friends: Macdev, PBFashion, Napshot, TAG Paintball, Sabah Paintball Association, PALS and not to forget Rock N' Rollas for pitting and coaching whenever they can, friends and family. We also took best team for East Malaysia Region; Sabah represent - Boleh bah kalau kau! And last but not least, Desmond Foo (residentevilchef) for those wonderful photos!

PALS releases 2011 Paintball Calendar

PALS has just released their 2011 paintball calendar and at a glance, a few new venues will be introduce. For MPOC's Melaka Cup, I assume it will be held in Melaka and also Selangor's Cup to be somewhere in Selangor. Sultan of Kedah's Cup would probably still be at Darul Aman Stadium in Alor Setar. Great venue with nice field.

A big surprise this year (actually for 2011) is the inclusion of Hainan (China) as the kick-off leg for the PALS series. Then followed by Thailand and the Philippines. And of course, the World Cup Asia in Langkawi! Tropical island with endless beauty. Looking forward to 2011 very much!

Well done PALS!

MPOC 2010 - Event 4 Results & Conclusions

Here are the results of the recent concluded MPOC 2010, at Padang Merbuk, Kuala Lumpur. Congratulations to all the winners.

Division 1
1st - X-Fox
2nd - Trauma
3rd - Demonz Red
4th - Warriors

Division 2
1st - Eastsiderzz
2nd - Ronin Nexus
3rd - Urban-X
4th - Red Sevens

Division 3
1st - Hammer Zero
2nd - Zoo
3rd - Pandamonium
4th - Rhymber-X

Division 4
1st - KSK Flash
2nd - Kejahatan 2
3rd - Prolintas Legion X
4th - Rock n Rolla

This has been one of the best MPOC in terms of organisation and venue. Two Sup'Air Arenas were brought in and it gave MPOC a touch of a major European tournament look. Those who are familiar with Millennium Series Paintball would have that feeling. Wet playing field and mud is what I've come to love. The mud wasn't that bad and the level playing field helps alot for aggressive teams.

The Arena
From the chat that I had with Simon Fournier of Sup'Air, the arena itself can be fully inflated in just a matter of five minutes! We got to witness this, when the Arena on field 2 has to be inflated back after the D3 games were stopped because of bad weather. After seeing how easy the to patch any tear on the arena PVC or even Bunkers, I couldn't help but wondering if MPOC would take it 'outside' like the European counterpart anytime soon. Find a nice tarmac with lots if walking traiffic near some crowded place, set up the Arena, lay down some carpet or turf. And bam! Instant tournament venue! Surely 2011 will be lots of surprises for paintballers.

Fairplay and Sportsmanship
I can't say much, but refereeing this time around is just adequate. It wasn't impressive but they're just okay. Last few legs were much better. I've never flared up in a paintball tournament for some time and last week, I just lost it. It's just wasn't paintball at all. I'm sadden for the fact that there are my friends and circumstances put us in opposite sides of the field. My team got penalized, we collected ourselves and got on with the remaining game. Then we played one of the best paintball when we held Trauma in our last preliminaries.

Of thunderstorm and rain
When it rained, it sums up the mood at our tent. Now the overall Champion for Division 1 has blown out wide, anybody can win. It's going to be a nail biting finish to the end. We shall bring our A game on the final event.

As usual, you can visit residentevilchef.com for event photos. Give it a few days for all the photos to be up.
